When we talk about New Zealand’s ODI World Cup journey, we’re not just discussing the games; it’s about the rollercoaster of emotions that this team has taken us through. They’ve been the perennial overachievers, the good guys who often break our hearts, and even at times, have had their own hearts broken. So, what’s in store for the black caps this time around? Let’s take a closer look at their current form.

A Close Look at Their Recent Form

Since that dramatic World Cup in 2019, New Zealand has continued to impress with their prowess in the power play. Their bowlers are like a wrecking ball in the first ten overs, averaging a stunning 26.3 runs per wicket during this period. This statistic is the best among all the teams, showing their ability to strike early and put the opposition under pressure.

However, when the bat is in their hands, things take a different turn. Since the start of 2022, their run rate in the first 10 overs averages at just 4.75, which is on the slower side. For context, arch-rivals Australia maintain the highest run rate in this phase. So, it’s clear that New Zealand faces challenges when it comes to building momentum early in their innings.

Opening Woes

Another aspect of concern is New Zealand’s opening partnerships. Averaging 28.60 for the first wicket is not an ideal situation. They find themselves in the company of Ireland at the bottom of the table in this regard. It’s an area they’d certainly want to improve, especially considering how crucial a good start is in ODI cricket.

Individuals Who Can Turn the Tide

But wait, it’s not all gloom and doom! New Zealand has some standout players who can turn things around in the blink of an eye.

One name that’s been causing ripples is Trent Boult. This left-arm quick might not have had too many outings in ODIs since 2022, but in those nine games, he’s managed to pick up 26 wickets at an astonishing average of 13.38. He even had a memorable five-wicket haul and two four-fers. If Boult is on a roll, you better watch out!

Then there’s Devon Conway, who’s proven himself both in the IPL and in the ODIs. He was the third-highest run-scorer in IPL 2023, and his best ODI score of 138 also came in India earlier this year. He’s someone you’d want to keep an eye on, for sure.

And not to forget Darrell Mitchell. He’s the kind of player you want in your team, someone who can handle the pressure with ease. Since the start of 2022, he’s scored 913 runs in 24 innings, including three centuries and three fifties. That’s quite an impressive record. Mitchell has also contributed with the ball, taking 13 wickets in just 10 innings.

So, while New Zealand might have their struggles, don’t ever make the mistake of writing them off. This team seems to thrive on challenges and surprises.

New Zealand's Prowess in Warm-ups

New Zealand thrashed Pakistan in their first warm-up match, winning by 5 wickets with 38 balls to spare. Ravindra was the star of the show for New Zealand, scoring a brilliant 97 runs after being promoted up the order.

New Zealand’s batting line-up showing incredible form, with the top and middle order all firing. We saw some excellent batting from Ravindra, Mitchell, and Chapman in particular. Kane Williamson also got some runs under his belt, which will be a good sign for New Zealand ahead of the main tournament.

New Zealand's impressive performance in the first two matches has proven their critics wrong.

New Zealand is getting ready for another World Cup campaign, and it’s expected to be an unpredictable journey.
